Maya is a Western Sandpiper--a shorebird--a bird distinct from others with her long legs and beak and pointed wings. She undertakes one of the most incredible feats in nature: an extraordinary migration between her wintering home in Mexico and breeding ground in Western Alaska. She flies along a flyway, an invisible highway followed by migratory birds in the sky. Many shorebirds like Maya travel upwards of 15,000 miles round trip in one year and some travel nearly 20,000 miles.
